A shingler is a craftsperson, who works with singles, which are normally fine cuttings of wood, laid in a similar way to slates, the word may also be used to describe the laying of other materials including slate (in US English). Traditionally a shingler lays square thin cuttings of oak or larch as well as western red cedar and robinia, cuttings with a smooth face are generally called singles, whilst those cut by hand, split naturally have a grainy face are generally called shakes.
